eviDent

The eviDent dental practice based research network is a consortium of dental care providers committed to advancing the knowledge of dental practice and finding ways to improve it. eviDent is an initative of the Oral Health CRC and the Australian Dental Association Victorian Branch (ADAVB).

eviDent aims to encourage relationships between practitioners and academic researchers. By building research capacity to produce and use evidence, eviDent facilitates and supports dental practices to produce and disseminate evidence which can translate into practice and inform policy. The eviDent committee considers project proposals submitted by its dental practitioner and academic members.

Current EviDent Projects

Evaluation of eviDent

The objectives of the evaluation are to:

  • Clarify eviDent's important areas for evaluation
  • Select the most appropriate design of evaluation for those areas; and
  • Formulate a strategy for gathering the evidence needed and using the evaluation findings.

It is anticipated that this project will report on the outputs and outcomes of eviDent, and allow eviDent to respond to the results of evaluations at various stages in its development, as well as refine and improve the eviDent network.

A 5 year retrospective assay of implant complications in private practice

This project will evaluate the efficacy of the measures used to manage implant complications, and provide information that could lead to evidence based management strategies.

The aims of the project are to:

  • Describe the baseline medical and oral health conditions of patients receiving single tooth implant restorations
  • Describe the distribution of the different implant systems used
  • Describe the placement / location of implant restorations by tooth position in the arch
  • Describe the type and timing of restorative complications observed; and
  • Identify trend patterns that appear to contribute to these complications.

Molar Incisor Hypomineralisation / Molar Hypomineralisation (MIH/MH)

This project will provide information that would lead to evidence based clinical management protocols and improve the diagnosis and management of MIH/MH, particularly in children and adolescents.

The aims of the project are to:

  • Investigate the distribution and severity of MIH/ MH in dental practices in Melbourne
  • Implement the use of the newly developed MHSI in these practices to assist in the early detection, diagnosis and treatment of MIH/MH; and
  • Propose and pilot new clinical management protocols for affected dentitions in order to maximise oral health and improve clinical outcomes.

The PREVENT study: reducing the X factor - understanding the relationship between general practice prescribing and xerostomia

The project brings together the knowledge, support and membership of two practice-based research networks - eviDent and VicReN. The project will provide outputs that will be used to propose a model designed to improve patient oral health and general health outcomes.

This project aims to:

  • Improve the level of knowledge of General Medical Practitioners (GMPs) regarding the oral health risks of prescribing medications causing salivary deficiency
  • Utilise GMPs as a first line for identifying those at increased risk from dental caries (and other saliva related oral health problem); and
  • Equip GMPs to provide caries prevention advice.
