What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal diseases, particularly periodontitis, are a group of diseases which affect the tissues surrounding teeth. If left untreated, periodontitis can lead to the loosening and loss of teeth.

Patients with periodontal disease may experience complex health problems, including risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and pregnancy complications. Around 20% of Australians experience moderate or severe periodontitis.

 

What is the Oral Health CRC doing?

The Oral Health CRC is undertaking a variety of research projects to increase understanding of periodontal disease and find better methods of prevention and treatment. Some of these projects include:

  • Investigating the role of inflammation in periodontal disease
  • Development of a diagnostic
  • Periodontal disease vaccine
