Periodontal diseases, particularly periodontitis, are a group of diseases which affect the tissues surrounding teeth. If left untreated, periodontitis can lead to the loosening and loss of teeth.
Patients with periodontal disease may experience complex health problems, including risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and pregnancy complications. Around 20% of Australians experience moderate or severe periodontitis.
